Partners
Hands on History will succeed because it combines the resources of four fully committed partners, FCESC, ODU, OHS and PIRE.
Franklin County Educational Service Center
FCESC is a statewide leader in K-12 education. One of the largest education service centers in Ohio, FCESC has led the state with innovative teacher training models and has served its member schools with unparalleled resources and programming. FCESC has repeatedly developed and implemented model programs for a wide variety of teacher professional development needs. In addition, the FCESC in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Education has coordinated a statewide intervention program for students needing to pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). The FCESC has both the capacity and the ability to coordinate the proposed federal Teaching American History Grant providing for the training of all teachers (K-12) throughout the state of Ohio.
Ohio Historical Society
A partnership with the Ohio Historical Society will provide teachers and students with immediate access to the foundations of historical inquiry-primary source documents and artifacts. OHS collections contain a wealth of materials with great potential to inspire interest in history and improve research skills and critical thinking. Among the Society's holdings are more than 142,555 books; 85,000 rolls of microfilm; 14,000 cubic feet of local government records; 15,000 maps; 20,000 volumes of newspapers; 45,000 cubic feet of state archives, manuscripts, photographs and special collections; over 500,000 history, natural history and archaeology artifacts; and 60 historic sites. The Society's staff of public historians has training and expertise in making historical material accessible to teachers and students. The Society exists to interpret, preserve, collect and make available evidence of the past and to provide leadership for the advancement of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the history of Ohio and the nation.
Ohio Dominican University
As a partner in this project, Ohio Dominican University will fuse traditional American history scholarship with best practices in teacher training. ODU will ensure that traditional American history scholarship continues to play the dominant role in all HOH activities by providing history professors with experience American history. ODU has long been recognized as a leading institution of higher education in the field of teacher preparation and education in Central Ohio, and its recently-added graduate programs in education and liberal studies have attracted teachers working on their M.A. degree.
